Catcher
While we all await the anticipated chapter one of the CRABs at Hogwarts, I have decided that my time would be useful reading a book rather than clicking refresh just waiting for the new text to appear. I just began reading J.D. Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye". I read it long ago when I was just a lad and I remember thinking the kid, Holden
Caulfield, had some major issues. I don't think I really liked the book too much until I started discussing it with my friend and we appreciated how honest and brutal Holden is. I began writing my own book about a week ago and have found that Holden and I are not so different. If you get a chance to read Catcher, I highly recommend that you do because it is hilarious and fantastically sarcastic. Just a heads up. You shouldn't have a hard time finding a copy because its one of the best books ever. This has been J.G.

Inception?
So after I had lunch and watched The Notebook today, I was rifling through some of my more English majory books and stumbled upon my copy of Edgar Allen Poe: The Complete Stories. Naturally, I thumbed through the index searching for a shorter work, but also one that went with the theme of the film I had just viewed. So I scanned the titles, waiting for one to jump out at me as having an obvious theme of love. After a minute or so, I spotted Eleonora, a six page marvel that was sure to be about Poe's young love. To my surprise (sarcasm) I found that the beginning spoke of madness, but Poe compared madness to dreams. "Men have called me mad; but the question is not yet settled, whether madness is or is not the loftiest intelligence - whether much that is glorious - whether all that is profound - does not spring from disease of thought... They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night" (Poe 530). My mind quickly jumped from love to dreams, so in finishing the story I searched famous poetry featuring dreams. Who would have guessed that three down from the top of the list was Edgar Allen Poe again with his poem "A Dream Within a Dream." I read it and immediately thought this has aspects of Christopher Nolan's film Inception. Being stranded within a dream landscape "Of a surf-tormented shore..." (Poe), is exactly the existence which Leo is contained to in the film. Read the poem for yourself, then watch the film. Thats it for now, just thought is was interesting.

NY Jets- Who Goes, Who Stays?
Being the huge Jets fan that I am I love to talk about them all of the time. Almost as much as I like to talk about Brett Favre. Anyway, so Holmes is a problem, Plax didn't produce, Sanchez is awful, Shotty can't call plays, Shonn Greene isn't very good, and our o-line takes some abuse. I can't believe I even believed we could make playoffs. Anyway, there are only a few players we must keep and they are Revis, Mangold, Cromartie, Moore, Ferguson, and yep thats it. I think Eric Smith needs to go and Jim Leonard can stay but needs some improvement. Our defense slacked a lot this year and we can't cover tight ends for crap. We have no pass rush either. I feel like Rex needs to spend more time on his defense and hire an offensive coordinator that knows what he's doing. A Rex defense with a new, Sanchezless offense could bring NY a superbowl.

Possible Ideas:
5). Sign new safeties (Smith needs to go before Leonard, but both are replaceable)
4). Upgrade pass rush- Add one big player and change the face of the defense. I also think Bart Scott should stay. (Can't wait)
3). Dish Holmes and don't sign Plax. (Keep Kerley as the #3, SIGN DWAYNE BOWE, and either force Holmes to man-up or sign a veteran to a 2 year deal. Reggie Wayne, Owens? Moss?! yes please even though Wayne would want like a 4-5 year deal. Also could figure out a way to get Justin Blackmon)
2). Get rid of Sanchez AND Brian Schottenheimer (they BOTH suck) Sanchez deserves blame, a lot of Jets fans are in denial of this because they are dumb.
1). FRICKIN GET PEYTON MANNING. Good land Rex, don't be so kissy faced with Sanchez. Bench him and get Peyton, or deal him. Stop being foolish.

There are a lot of huge free agents out there. I would personally trade Shonn Greene and try to sign Forte or Rice even though I hate them both and they both will stay with their teams most likely. Lynch would also be a good fit for ground and pound if Rex would go back to that; although I see no point considering we can get Peyton. If we stick with Sanchez (Smh) go back to ground and pound and get a new RB. I like LT for the screen pass and the short dish so I wouldn't mind bringing him back. I wish we would have just kept T. Jones and Leon Washington though...jeez. Alright well I could talk all day but I don't feel like it so PACE.

NFL MVP(T.N.B.F)
Hello CRABbers,
Two friends of mine and I were discussing the 2011-2012 NFL season and we realized that there is one true MVP this year. Might as well call this hall-of-famer the MVPE- Most Valuable Player Ever, because he is and always will be. Ladies and CRABlings, I present the MVP of the 2011 Season:

DANG STRAIGHT it's BRETT FAVRE, the greatest quarter back of all time and second greatest human being second to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (I want to quickly affirm that I love Jesus and my love for Favre is not lie-crossing like Len's love for Boy George or Drew Carrey).
So that leaves us with this question...who is the MVPTNBF? Who is the MVP thats not Brett Favre. Well I'll tell you my opinion.

Setting Records by breaking Dan Marino's heart. Love it. Love Brees. Can't stand Marino and his stupid dolphins who beat my Jets at least once a year. Agh I hate them more than the patriots. SO congrats Brees and in my opinion you are the leagues most valuable player with Rodgers being a very close second.
I want to also send an honorable mention to two players, pictured below.

For the newbs: top is Eric Berry, bottom is Bob Sanders

NFC Playoff Picture, Yep Who Cares
Yooooo to all of our readers (especially Mikey D). Tonight I want to talk about the NFC playoff picture, ok? So what really has me excited is this Sunday nights game between the Cowboys and the Giants. I am pulling for the g-men and betting that they will win. Romo is a little banged up and I would trust Eli in a big game situation over Tony. Anyway, that should be the game of the week and will hopefully send the giants on a nice playoff run. So here is the seeding:

1). Packers
2). 49ers
3). Saints
4). Giants
5). Lions
6). Falcons
Here's how I see it playing out. Saints, at home, beat the falcons who aren't all that great. Drew Brees has a big game and they look like they could beat the packers. The Lions and Giants go at it in a great game with the g-men barely slipping by the Stafford-Megatron connection. Eli picks apart the Lions secondary in the 4th quarter and the Giants win 30-28.
Packers and the Giants once again square off and the giants, who play to the level of their competitor, stay with them until the end once again and the packers win 38-31.
The Saints and 49ers do the dance and since the 49ers are so terribly overrated, they lose to Brees' cannon and we have a packers-saints NFC bout.
This is really tough to call, because one of these teams is winning the superbowl. I almost think Brees can out-play Rodgers, but not on the road in the cold. The packers win and go back to the Superbowl, which they again win and we're all pissed off.
Better Situation: The giants steam right through everybody, meet the Jets in the superbowl, and I go to the parade either way. Go Jets. I'm out. PACE!

Wandering Mind and the 2011 AFC Playoff Picture
I don't know what to write about right now so I'm going to start babbling and discover what I like to talk about as I'm typing. My hands are a little tired and prune-y however from sitting in a hot tub (great story). Anyway. So first may I say that the Jets really made me sad this year. Lost to some bum teams (Eagles, Raiders, Broncos) and are going to miss the playoffs this year. They are going to lose to the dolphins this week and the bengals are going to get the playoff birth. The Bengals will lose to the ravens, but the chargers will beat the raiders and the broncos will lose to the chiefs. The broncos have the edge on oak-town and the titans won't get in because if I remember correctly the bengals beat the titans in the regular season; therefore they would hold the tie breaker. So here's the AFC Playoff picture:
1) Patriots
2) Ravens
3) Texans
4) Broncos
5) Steelers
6) Bengals
Here's where it gets interesting. The Pats and Ravens enjoy their bye weeks respectively and the Texans battle the Bengals, the Broncos welcome the Steelers. The Broncos beat the banged up big ben at home because the steelers have to travel to mile-high. Broncos shock only to be destroyed the very next game by the Pats. The Texans sneak by the bengals with TJ Yates having a very average game and go on to lose to the ravens. This sucks. The pats and ravens play for a superbowl shot and the Pats head into the superbowl against _____.
This could all change with a NY Jets playoff berth. You see, the Jets would play the texans, and beat them, because the Jets are a different team in the playoffs and in my opinion match up well with the Texans. This is one of the few times having a coach like Rex Ryan pays off; he motivates them and they play hard for him when they really need to. The Jets would then play the ravens. Yes, the ravens beat them in the regular season, but thats because their defense and the Jets lack of offense allowed them too. Flacco was awful, absolutely terrible. I could see the Jets beating the Ravens for the first time in franchise history (because of a good game from Sanchez) and then playing against the Pats, who they could and would beat, and they could make it to the superbowl. It could happen, it just won't.
Another scenario would be the Steelers and Ravens switching seeds. In this case, the ravens lose to the broncos, the Steelers get the bye, then take down the texans, and then beat the pats again. Boom- superbowl repeat. I would rather them in then the Pats or Ravens though, so this scenario isn't too bad. Anyway you slice it, an NFC team is taking home the trophy this year.
I will tackle the NFC playoffs before sunday. I am tired of typing. PACE!

Peter Pan: Exploration in the Realm of Imagination
Peter Pan:
Exploration in the Realm of Imagination
Walt Disney’s production of Peter Pan is one of the most beloved of Disney’s many childhood classics, for its celebration of youth as a temporary time that must not be rushed but on the contrary embraced for its innocence and exploration in the realm of imagination. The film portrays a young girl, Wendy, as she is confronted by her unimaginative father’s want to end her stay in the nursery with her younger brothers. In requesting Wendy leave the nursery, Mr. Darling (Wendy’s father) is asking her to drop her girlish dreams especially that of Peter Pan who serves as the last dream between childhood and adulthood and assume her responsibilities as a young woman. Wendy’s adventure with Peter Pan through Neverland serves as an aid to help Wendy grow within herself accepting her future, but still maintaining an imagination.
The film offers Wendy a last hurrah of sorts, when Peter and Tinkerbell (a fairy) arrive and magically fly Wendy and her younger brothers away to Neverland where kids never have to grow up. The famous scene presents the viewer with a different aspect of flight, they just think of a happy thought, any happy little thought and with little bit of pixie dust they can fly. As they sing, “think of the happiest things, it’s the same as of having wings,” the characters give the children the idea that they can leave their fears behind if they utilize their imagination. Each of the children’s thoughts that they use to fly become a reality once they get to Neverland: Pirates, Indians, and a mermaid lagoon all become keys to the plot. The flying scene in Peter Pan is not only a well known song, it is also a comforting concept for children to be able to use their imagination to create.
Once Wendy and the boys begin to interact with the other characters in Neverland especially the evil Captain Hook, Wendy longs again for the comfort and safety of normal life, a theme also found in Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. Wendy’s yearning for home coincides with the lack of attention she receives from Peter once princess Tiger Lily enters the story. A theme of female jealousy is present within the film, as Wendy, the mermaids, and Tinkerbell all fight for Peter’s affection. First appearing when Tink flies down ahead of the other to convince the Lost Boys to shoot down Wendy. Peter finds out that Tink is to blame for Wendy’s near tragic fall and banishes Tinkerbell from Neverland forever. Tink utterly consumed with jealousy, after being exiled from Neverland by Peter for attempting to hurt Wendy, actually confides in Captain Hook the whereabouts of Peter’s hideout resulting in the capture of the Lost Boys and the Darling children and the near death of Peter. After successfully humiliating Captain Hook, saving his friends, and with a little help from Tinkerbell Peter flies Captain Hook’s pirate ship back to London.
Mr. and Mrs. Darling return home from their party, to find all of the children asleep. They come across Wendy asleep in front of the open nursery window, out of which they see the flying pirate ship that the father recognizes from his own childhood. This rediscovery of his childhood dreams softens his mindset, changing his decision about letting Wendy stay in the nursery. Mr. Darling’s soft spot for imagination at the end is a theme one may see present in many of Walt Disney animated classics. Peter Pan maintains the belief of the innocence in childhood and the freedom found within ones imagination; along with enforcing the idea that one can escape the provincial life and nominates adventure, whether real or imaginary, as a positive experience that leads to personal growth. Wendy leaves to Neverland in fear of losing her childhood and after her adventure with Peter she returns confident in her future, knowing that if she finds the need to she can always return to Neverland in her imagination. This is an idea reinforced by the Mr. and Mrs. Darling at the end of the film remembering their childhood and entranced with the magic they too once experienced.
The story of Peter Pan has consistently been an uplifting one throughout my childhood and remains so in my time in early adulthood. The notion of embracing one’s childhood and thinking happy thoughts in the hopes of eventually flying provides comfort in times of despair. Thinking of happy thoughts may not actually result in flight, but the action does however lighten one’s spirit ensuring an emotional high rivaled by nothing I have ever experienced. As some say a smile is contagious, and Disney movies provide the happiness to this smiling epidemic. In my youth I used Disney movies as a crutch when I was hobbled by times of hardship or sickness. Countless sick days were spent home from school, watching Peter Pan, and sipping soup; even after knowing the outcome and memorizing all of the song lyrics the happiness that the film projects served its uplifting purpose. It consistently brought a smile to my face and the familiar warm feeling associated with good memories. Though critics may question the social motives behind Disney movies, there is a consistency within the music and the happy endings that will bring a smile to the faces of the listeners each time without fail. Peter Pan, being amongst the first movies I personally owned as a child, I cherished it; I brought the VHS tape with me to the park and when I visited family. The characters in the story became friends that I could call upon in a time of need or when I desired inspiration for my next adventure or project. My friends and I reenacted scenes from the movie, never afraid that playing follow the leader may result in an actual Indian ambush.
One moral that can be taken away from Peter Pan and most other Disney animated classics is that everyone must take their own journey to iron out any flaws or errors associated with adolescence and embrace personal growth to eventually find happiness. Most importantly though is that the journey does not have to be held in some exotic landscape it can happen in your room just using your imagination. Walt Disney’s Peter Pan has lasted as long as it has because the themes and ideas it presents to children resonate in a child’s mind. From imaginary friends to adventures in a sandbox, a child’s imagination is a plant in need of cultivation to produce its best product. Disney movies, such as Peter Pan, tap into the power of imagination, sparking the flame of creation.
Have a CRABtastic day,
